Services

What we retrieve from the vehicle

Three services, sold separately or together. What a vehicle stores depends on its year, make and model, so we tell you what is retrievable before you commit.

EDR download and analysis

The event data recorder in the airbag control module stores the seconds before a crash. We retrieve and preserve it with the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval system, then report what it shows.

May include

  • Vehicle speed, engine speed and throttle for about 5 seconds before impact
  • Brake switch status
  • Driver and passenger seat belt status
  • Passenger airbag state and time to deployment
  • Maximum change in velocity (ΔV)

Infotainment extraction

Infotainment and telematics units log what the car and its connected phones were doing. We extract that record with Berla vehicle forensics tools.

May include

  • Location history and navigation entries
  • Phones and devices paired to the vehicle
  • Call logs and contacts synced from those devices
  • Time-stamped events such as door openings and gear changes

Vehicle inspection

A documented, photographed inspection of the vehicle and its damage, completed while the evidence still exists.

Order it when

  • The vehicle is about to be repaired, sold at salvage or crushed
  • The damage needs to be compared against the reported loss
  • A reconstruction may be needed later and the vehicle will not wait

When the file needs an expert opinion

All Crash Data retrieves, analyzes and documents. Opinions on speed, causation and fault, and testimony, come from our parent firm, Kauderer & Associates. Their reconstructionists work from the data we already collected, so nothing is gathered twice.

For claims

When the drivers disagree, read the recorder.

Most liability disputes turn on speed, braking and how hard the impact was. Many vehicles recorded all three.

Disputed liability

Recorded speed, throttle and brake status for the seconds before impact, set beside each driver's account.

Minor impact, major injury claim

The recorder's change in velocity (ΔV) is the vehicle's own measure of how severe the impact was.

Total loss headed to salvage

When the vehicle is sold or crushed, its data goes with it. We collect first so the file keeps the evidence.

No independent witness

Single-vehicle and late-night losses where the only account is the driver's. Speed, braking and belt use may be on record.

For SIU

Test the story against the vehicle's own log.

A staged or caused collision still has to be driven in a real car, and the car keeps notes.

Staged and caused collisions

Hard braking with nothing ahead, or acceleration into the impact, shows up in the pre-crash record.

Who was in the vehicle

Seat belt switch status and passenger airbag state can indicate whether the seats claimed as occupied actually were.

Where the vehicle has been

Infotainment systems can hold location history, paired phones and time-stamped events when the place, the timeline or the driver is in question.

Earlier impacts

Some recorders store more than one event. An earlier impact on the module can point to prior damage presented as new.

How it works

From assignment to evidence in four steps

  1. Send the assignment

Complete the online form with the claim number, the vehicle and where it is sitting.

  2. Get the scope and fee

We tell you what can be retrieved from that vehicle and the flat fee, before any work starts.

  3. We collect

A technician retrieves the data and documents the vehicle where it sits, whether that is a tow yard, a body shop or a salvage pool.

  4. Evidence in your file

You receive the data report and photographs. If the claim needs a reconstruction opinion, Kauderer & Associates works from the same data.

One file or a program

Send a single assignment when a claim calls for it, or set up a carrier program with agreed pricing and one intake process for your whole unit.

Common questions

Before you send a vehicle our way

Does every vehicle have a recorder?
Most late-model passenger vehicles do. What it stores, and whether it can be read, depends on year, make and model. Send the VIN and we will tell you what to expect.
Can you retrieve data from a vehicle that will not power up?
Often, yes. When the electrical system is damaged, the module can frequently be connected to and read directly.
Who has to authorize a download?
California Vehicle Code section 9951 limits who may retrieve recorder data, generally to the registered owner or someone with the owner's consent or a court order. Tell us who owns the vehicle and we will confirm authorization with you first.
Do you give opinions on fault?
No. All Crash Data retrieves the data, reports what it shows and documents the vehicle. Opinions on speed, causation and fault come from the accredited reconstructionists at Kauderer & Associates.
